Medford Residents Recognized for Courage in Facing Chronic Illness

The Oley Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of those requiring home parenteral nutrition (HPN) and home enteral nutrition (HEN), announced Bethany and Cindy Sabbag of Medford, MA, as the 2013 recipients of the LifelineLetter Award for HPN. Bethany and her mother, Cindy, were honored for demonstrating courage, perseverance and a positive attitude in dealing with mitochondrial disease that has left Bethany dependent on HPN, a special liquid food given intravenously that sustains people who cannot ingest or absorb sufficient nutrients through a typical diet. The award was presented at the 28th Annual Oley Consumer/Clinician Conference in Hyannis, MA.

Bethany and Cindy were also recognized for their exceptional generosity in helping others in their struggle with HPN. Bethany has spoken to others about overcoming the challenges associated with mitochondrial disease and demonstrated an incredible attitude and spirit which inspires anyone listening to consider what is possible in their lives.

“My disease and treatment can certainly be challenging, so having a strong support system has been crucial to living an enriched and fulfilling life,” said Bethany. “I don’t know that I could have made it through without the support of Oley, my home nursing staff and most importantly the unrelenting care of my mother who has never stopped believing in me and my abilities.”

Bethany has not been able to sustain herself on a typical diet nearly her entire life. As an infant, she was diagnosed with a chronic pseudo obstruction and mitochondrial disease, making her reliant on HEN, or tube feedings, until the age of 10. For the last 19 years, Bethany has been dependent on HPN, additional fluids and multiple medications, all of which are delivered through an IV.

Despite the challenges associated with her condition, including, but not limited to ongoing fatigue due to her altered energy metabolism, Bethany has strived to get the most out of life. As a painter, graphic artist, and actress, Bethany uses her challenges as motivation and brings passion to her work.
