Raised Crosswalks Coming to Medford Soon

Medford is starting a raised crosswalk “pilot program,” according to Mayor Michael McGlynn.

Mayor McGlynn announced the news at a press conference last week.

McGlynn said the first raised crosswalk would be installed this week. It will be located near 100 Winthrop Street.

Each raised crosswalk is expensive, costing upwards of $40,000, since proper drainage needs to be installed in additional to the crosswalk itself.

Mayor McGlynn said two additional raised crosswalks would also be installed on Harvard Street and Central Avenue.

The crosswalks, which have been used extensively in Cambridge and Somerville, essentially act like speed bumps and force traffic to slow down.
