Tufts Launches Youth Philharmonic

The Tufts Department of Music and Community Music at Tufts announce the formation of the Tufts Youth Philharmonic, a Friday afternoon orchestra for advanced high school orchestral musicians beginning in September 2013. The orchestra will be led by noted conductor Professor John Page, with coachings and sectionals led by Boston’s finest musicians.

The Tufts Youth Philharmonic will nurture every aspect of each orchestra member’s development, with individual attention and strong group camaraderie. Rehearsals run each Friday from 4:00-6:30 p.m., including sectionals and full orchestra sessions. This unique structure will give each member of the orchestra individual, sectional, and full orchestral rehearsal/performance levels in one comprehensive experience.  The coaches will provide individual and group feedback, playing alongside the students in the full orchestra rehearsals, and offering assistance and encouragement every step of the way.

Award-winning conductor and Tufts Director of Orchestral Activities, John Page, has been on the faculties of the New England Conservatory (preparatory division and college) and Boston University, and has acted as Assistant Conductor to the Boston Philharmonic. Mr. Page is also Music Director of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra in New Hampshire and the PARMA Orchestra; he conducted the double platinum-winning PBS show, Celtic Woman, and has traveled the US twice with the group on their Symphony Tour, conducting over a dozen orchestras including the Atlanta Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, and Colorado Symphony.

The Tufts Youth Philharmonic will rehearse in the state-of-the-art Granoff Music Center on the Tufts Medford/Somerville Campus.  Performances will take place in Distler Performance Hall in the Granoff Music Center, the finest small recital hall in the Boston area.  The Philharmonic is the newest addition to the rich offerings of Community Music at Tufts, a program founded in 2007.

Placement in the Tufts Youth Philharmonic will be by audition.  For audition information, repertoire plans for the inaugural 2013-2014 concert season, and class fees, please visit http://as.tufts.edu/music/musiccenter/program/youthphilharmonic.htm or contact Staff Assistant Danna Solomon at Danna.Solomon@tufts.edu or 617.627.3564.
