The Medford High School varsity baseball team improved its record to 13-3 with a 6-0 road win over Malden Catholic on Tuesday.

“Tuesday’s win is extremely gratifying to the seniors who have had some tough luck over the past few years against MC,” said Head Coach Mike Nestor. “It’s also nice for MHS to prove to other potential athletes that Mustang baseball is top notch and can compete with any school public or private. This game between the the two teams is always hard fought.”

Chris Hayes pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only six hits while giving up no walks, according to assistant coach Ryan Kozul.

“Senior Chris Hayes’ performance on the mound today was that of a kid who was dialed in and wanted to show that MHS is a team to reckon with,” said Coach Nestor. “From the first inning to the last he kept the Lancers off balanced and confused.”

Hayes, 2-3, also contributed two RBI’s. John Lavoie was 2-4 with an RBI and run scored. Sean Doncaster contributed two RBI’s while Jake Porrazzo had a run scored and Dave Center added an RBI.

Kozul said the Mustangs played their best defensive game of the season, with great plays from Doncaster, Dom Ramasci, Ryan Covelle, and Kevin Andrew.

“Today we again proved what a complete team we are all around; from pitching, fielding, hitting and continued leadership on and off the field,” said Nestor. “These kids love the game of baseball and have given a 110% every time they step on the field.”

Medford is 6-1 in the Greater Boston League heading into an important game at Malden on Thursday. A win would guarantee Medford at least a share of the league title with Everett depending on the outcomes of Everett’s games with Somerville and Cambridge. Medford has not won a league title in baseball for over ten years.

“On Thursday we hope to capture our goal for the season and that’s to win the GBL,” said Coach Nestor. “Should be a great day for baseball and hopefully the city can get behind us and come over to Pine Banks to root for the Mustangs!”
