A win over Newton South has moved the Medford High School girls varsity lacrosse team one step closer to the state tournament.

The Lady Mustangs defeated Newton South 9-7 on home turf on Monday, according to Head Coach Matt Galusi.

Katherine Timmins led the Mustangs with three goals and an assist. Cassidy LeBert and Nicole Mortell each contributed two goals while Mortell also had two assists. Jamie Traverse and Lydia Regan each added one goal and an assist.

Coach Galusi credited his team’s defense for a solid effort.

“Desiree Savoia was everywhere on defense and really anchored our defensive unit tonight. Adrienne Porrazzo continued with her stellar defensive play and had a key block of a shot at an integral point of the game,” said Galusi. “Lydia Regan continued to be one of the best centers around, winning a majority of her draws (face offs).”

Next up for the Lady Mustangs is a trip to Cambridge on Wednesday. A win would secure the fifth straight undefeated Greater Boston League title for Medford.

Thursday night is Senior Night when Medford hosts Matignon at Hormel Stadium. The Mustangs will then wrap up the season with two games against Brookline before gearing up for the state tournament.

Medford is currently 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the GBL.

“While we are playing well and winning, I really don’t think we have hit our stride yet,” said Coach Galusi. “Once we can string together all of the elements necessary to play good, team lacrosse, we will be a force to be reckoned with.”
