Mustang Rowers Earn GBL Title

The Medford High Rowing Team brought home both the Boys’ and Girls’ Greater Boston League 2013 Championship titles.

On Sunday, April 28, the Medford High crew team competed against Somerville High School, Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, and Malden High School for this win. This is the first time ever a team other than Cambridge has won the girls’ title and only the second time that a team other than Cambridge has won the boys’ title.

The day kicked off with back-to-back gold medals for both the girls’ varsity 4-boat and the boys’ varsity 4-boat. After that big start, Medford teams won 6 gold medals in the varsity and novice divisions for boys and girls and had 5 second place finishes.

On the boys’ side, Medford ended the day 10 points ahead of Malden’s 8 points. Medford girls tied with Cambridge girls; in a tie the championship usually goes to the team winning the varsity 4 race, however, the Medford and Cambridge girls are league co-champs.

This is a big win for a team started just seven years ago with twelve rowers and one coach. This season the team has almost 60 rowers and three coaches.

On Sunday May 5, Medford High School will host its first ever regatta, The Mayor’s Cup, at Tufts Boat House, River’s Edge Park, Malden. Racing begins at 1:00 p.m.
