Congressman Ed Markey is reaching out to women to help him secure a seat in the US Senate.

Rep. Markey, a Malden Democrat, has the support of Attorney General and Medford resident Martha Coakley, who participated in a campaign event on Thursday dubbed “Women for Markey.”

According to information released by Markey’s campaign, Coakley joined dozens of activists at Markey’s campaign headquarters in Charlestown to launch the outreach program, and she praised his leadership on issues such as choice and equal pay.

“Ed Markey is as a proven leader on women’s rights and reproductive health, and a relentless supporter of a woman’s right to choose and equal pay for equal work,” said AG Coakley. “I know Ed Markey will continue to be one of our strongest advocates for women’s issues as a United States Senator.”

Markey rallied support of hundreds of other woman across the state who gathered at “house parties” to hear the Congressman speak via telephone.

According to his campaign, Markey is “100% pro-choice,” and he has been endorsed by NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

“The right to choose is a fundamental right that must never be infringed upon,” said Rep. Markey. “I am proud to be pro-choice, and as the Democratic pro-choice candidate in this election, I am committed to protecting the right to choose, stopping the Republicans from restricting access to preventative health services and ensuring every woman receives equal pay for equal work.”

The “Women for Markey” initiative also has its own Facebook page.

The long-time Congressman is running for the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, who was appointed Secretary of State. A primary is scheduled for April 30. Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch is also running.
