Granoff Music Center at Tufts UniversityMogulesco: A Tale of Yiddish Theater Monday, December 3

The Tufts University Department of Music presents the musical revue Mogulesco: A Tale of Yiddish Theater, written by Mark Slobin, in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 8 p.m. This event is co-sponsored by the Tufts University Department of Music, Tufts Hillel, and 3Ps.

The performance features the work of Zelig (Sigmund) Mogulesco (1856-1914), who is often called the “Charlie Chaplin of the Yiddish theatre”. Mogulesco was known for his comedy, agility, and also songwriting. The performance is directed by Michael Morris with music by the Jumbo Knish Factory, Tufts’ Klezmer ensemble under the direction of Michael McLaughlin, and a cast of Tufts student performers.

Music for Two Queens, A Concert by Tufts Early Music Ensemble Tuesday, December 4

The Tufts University Department of Music is pleased to announce Music for Two Queens, a performance by the Tufts Early Music Ensemble on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 8 p.m in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center. The performance will feature Renaissance music from the course of two music patrons from the turn of the 16th century, Marguerite of Austria and Isabella d’Este, with guest artist Rebekah Ahrendt. Jane Hershey will direct works by Josquin, Pierre de la Rue, Marco Cara, and many others. Instruments will include viola da gamba, dulcian, harp, cornetto, krummhorn, harpsichord, sackbut, lute, recorder, and voices.

School for Lovers, an Evening of Opera Scenes Thursday, December 6

The Tufts University Department of Music presents the Tufts Opera Ensemble in “School for Lovers: An Evening of Opera Scenes” in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 8 p.m.

The Tufts Opera Ensemble will perform an evening of favorite opera scenes, fully staged with piano accompaniment, and will feature scenes from classical operas such as The Magic Flute, Patience, Cosi Fan Tutte, and the Marriage of Figaro as well as scenes from “contemporary American Opera” including Street Scene and West Side Story. The Tufts Opera Ensemble is directed by Carol Mastrodomenico and musically directed by Thomas Stumpf.

Tufts Electronic Music Instrument Ensemble Saturday, December 8

The Tufts University Department of Music presents the debut concert of the Tufts Electronic Music Instrument Ensemble in the Fisher Performance Room at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 8 p.m.

Dr. Paul Lehrman will direct the group in its first performance of classic and original repertoire spanning seven decades, for live performers and electronics. In addition to music by Tom Waits, Jefferson Airplane, Talking Heads, Modest Mussorgsky, and Edgard Varèse, the show will feature instruments, computers, game controllers, and some surprises.
