Grace Episcopal Church Removes Bells for Restoration

On June 5th and 6th nine bells from Grace Episcopal Church’s bell tower were removed to be refurbished. The bells haven’t been able to ring for over ten years.

It is the first time the bells have been removed since they were installed in 1873. The bells were all cast by Blake Brothers Company, the successor firm to Paul Revere’s foundry. The largest bell was given to Grace Church by the city of Medford for use as a fire-bell.

The bells are being shipped to Chime Master in Lancaster, Ohio to be restored, fitted with new clappers and placed on a new metal frame. They will be re-installed this fall after the restoration work on the 90-foot bell tower is complete.

The refurbishment of the bells is part of Phase II of the church’s restoration of its historic building.
