Council to Review Parking Garage, Police Station Tues.

On Tuesday, April 3 the Medford City Council will discuss a proposed Medford Square parking garage and possible locations for a police station headquarters, according to information released by City Clerk Ed Finn.

At 5:45PM the Council will meeting in a Committee of the Whole to receive an update on a proposed parking garage on Governors Avenue and a parking management program. The meeting is taking place in Room 207 at Medford City Hall.

According to information released by Mayor Michael McGlynn, the parking garage, which is planned for Governors Avenue, will cost $8 million. The Mayor anticipates the garage, which will have paid spots, will bring in $400,000 in revenue to help cover the payments on the bond. Mayor McGlynn also estimates a new parking management plan, which includes parking meters and enforcement, will bring in $600,000 in revenue. Additionally, the state has promised $2 million for the garage pending the Council’s approval.

In his inaugural address Mayor McGlynn said the proposed parking garage, four and a half stories tall, will have two hundred public spots and green features such as LED lights and room for the installation of solar panels.

“In order to continue to expand our economic base, the garage is paramount to our success. Small businesses cannot survive without parking,” said Mayor McGlynn.

The garage is part of a multi-million dollar capital improvement plan. Details of the plan are available on medford.org.

At 6:00PM the Subcommittee on Public Safety will meeting in Room 207 to discuss potential locations for a police station headquarters. Medford Police Chief Leo Sacco has been invited to the meeting. Public Safety Subcommittee members are Councilors Richard Caraviello (Chair), Paul Camuso, and Fred Dello Russo, Jr.

Evaluating the police station headquarters is also part of Mayor McGlynn’s proposed capital improvement plan. The city recently issued an RFQ for a firm to evaluate the current police station to determine if it should be rehabilitated or torn down.

Following these two meetings, the Council’s regular meeting will take place at 7PM in the Council Chambers. That meeting is broadcast live on Channel 16. The entire agenda is available on the Council’s webpage.
