Markey Receives Celtics ‘Heroes’ Award

Rep. MarkeyOn Monday, January 23 US Representative Edward Markey was honored by the Celtics for his advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities.

Celebrating the long-standing partnership between the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation and Perkins School for the Blind, the Boston Celtics “Heroes Among Us” program honored Rep. Markey for a lifetime of fighting for the rights of people with disabilities.

“Congressman Markey’s national leadership in authoring the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act is the most recent chapter in a career of constant and tireless effort to make all communications media accessible for all Americans. Students at Perkins School for the Blind, which is in Markey’s 7th Congressional District, have experienced first-hand the impact of their Congressman’s advocacy,” said a statement from Rep. Markey’s office.

The Shamrock Foundation also made a $50,000 donation to the Perkins School.

The Boston Celtics Heroes Among Us program is one of the premier community outreach programs in professional sports. The Heroes Among Us Award is presented to an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the community, according to the program’s website. At each home game, the Celtics and their fans salute the exemplary efforts of these citizens during a special in-game presentation on the legendary parquet floor.
