Despite his Medford roots New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be pulling for (at least publicly) the hated New York Giants when he attends the Super Bowl this Sunday.

According to a press statement from Mayor Bloomberg’s office, Bloomberg is encouraging New Yorkers to wear blue on Friday and he has made a friendly wager on the big game with Boston Mayor Tom Menino.

“New York sports teams have a history of cleaning up when they go to Boston – and now our fans will have a chance to do the same,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Any New Yorker not too tired from salsa dancing Sunday night will be able to enter an online lottery for the chance to win. I also want to thank our generous partners who have agreed to fund a trip to New York City for a Boston family – but we expect that if Boston fans want to help us set another record for tourism, they will have to pay their own way.”

“I have a lot of faith in the Patriots. They carried us this far, and I hope they’ll carry the Vince Lombardi Trophy right back to Boston,” Mayor Menino said. “But either on the field or off, the City of Boston wins by being able to showcase some of the best our great city has to offer.”

If the unthinkable happens and the Giants win the Super Bowl, a New York family, chosen by lottery, will win a trip to Boston. The fancy trip includes air fare, a two-night stay at the Ritz, dinner at upscale restaurants, and box seats to either the Bruins or Celtics, among other perks.

If the Patriots should win on Sunday, a Boston family will be treated to the New York experience. The trip includes air fare, hotel, tickets to a Rangers or Knicks game, and tours of historic places such as Ellis Island.
