2011 a Busy Year for Medford Health Matters

Medford Health Matters logo2011 was an active, successful year for Medford Health Matters and MHM was involved in a variety of projects.

A grant from Mount Auburn Hospital helped fund programs for middle school youth and seniors in Medford that included partnerships with the Medford Family Network, Hallmark Health, and the Medford Public Schools. Team Medford and the Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force were involved in several activities with middle school and high school students both in the classroom and in after school clubs. IA2SD (I’m Allergic to Stupid Decisions) received a Science to Service award for its text messaging campaign that provides positive affirmations and reasons for teens to use to avoid succumbing to peer pressure. A broad-based committee was launched to examine health disparities in Medford. In addition to screening “Unnatural Causes” in November the committee continues to plan other events and outreach activities.

Medford Health Matters increased its visibility in the community with public service announcements that have appeared in a variety of media, including the Medford Transcript, Medford Patch, Medford Daily Mercury, InsideMedford.com, Boston.com/Medford, and on the MHM webpage. Members participated in several community events during 2011 including Let’s Move! Medford (Grace Episcopal Church), Tufts Community Day, and Medford’s Caribbean Festival. Several new members joined the board in 2011 and have brought new energy and ideas!
