Girls Basketball

The St. Clement Lady Anchors won their second game on Monday, January 9 against Mount St. Joseph Academy, 44-31. The Lady Anchors came out strong, leading 25 to 13 after the first half. Elva Martinez (Somerville) continued to lead the Anchors defensively with nine rebounds and nine steals. Allison Caloggero (Medford) was a huge contributor, scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds to go along with three assists. Jessica Popken (Medford) led the team offensively with twenty-three points, including four from long range. Adding two more from long range was Diana Tran (Somerville), who also played great on defense, recording four steals.

The junior varsity team also secured a convincing 42-33 win. Captain Erika Lydon (Medford) nearly had a double-double, scoring twenty points with seven steals and nine assists. Senior Nicole Cella (Charlestown) had nine rebounds and Maria Martinez (Medford) assisted with ten steals and six rebounds.

The team also faced undefeated league rival Pope John. The Anchors put up a good fight and took the game right down to the wire, losing 31-50. The game was back and forth before the Anchors had to foul down the stretch. Stepping up for the Lady Anchors was Katie Monestime (Somerville), who led the team on both ends with seventeen points, nine rebounds and five assists. Also playing well for the Anchors was Kristina Ofoedu (Somerville), who came up with two huge steals and a fast break layup in just a minute’s time in the third quarter. Elva Martinez (Somerville) continued to supply the energy on defense, guarding Pope John’s towering center. Sidney Cezil (Everett) came up with a few huge blocks that really got the Anchors going.

The JV team improved their overall record to 3-2 with a dominating 34-8 win over Pope John. Eighth grader Erika Lydon (Medford) led the pack again with twenty points, six assists and five steals. Senior Nicole Cella (Charlestown) supported the effort with six points, seven steals and five rebounds, while Junior Judy D’Haiti (Cambridge) had twelve rebounds and four points.

This week the Lady Anchors will travel to Framingham to face the Marian Mustangs and will face off against the Cathedral Panthers at home on Friday, January 20 at 5pm.

Boys Basketball

The St. Clement boys basketball team lost a hard-fought 74-69 battle to the league-leading Pope John Tigers on Friday night. Kaeshawn Woods was the key for the Pope John attack with twenty-seven points. St. Clement was led by freshman Emaru Pena (Roxbury), who scored twenty-two points, including six three-pointers. Junior Kevin Foley (Medford) had sixteen points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Jesus Gambaro (Charlestown) chipped in with fourteen points and eight rebounds, four on the offensive boards.

The Anchormen are 3-2 in the Catholic Central League play and host Marian at home Tuesday.
