‘Making Slavery History’ at Royall House January 18

Making Slavery HistoryHistorian Margot Minardi is the author of Making Slavery History: Abolitionism and the Politics of Memory in Massachusetts, published in 2010. She will be at the Royall House in Medford on Wednesday, January 18 to discuss how New Englanders’ arguments about and commemorations of the American Revolution set the course for antislavery politics in the nineteenth century. Focusing on the period between the Revolution and the Civil War, her remarks will address how the north’s colonial experience with slavery affected the growth of abolitionism and how Massachusetts abolitionists drew on the local Revolutionary heritage to mobilize public opposition to Southern slavery.

Margot Minardi is an Assistant Professor of History and Humanities at Reed College in Oregon, where she teaches courses in colonial and Revolutionary American history, early African American history, and social reform. Professor Minardi will be available after the program to sign copies of her book, which will be available for sale.
