Alice Isaacs, 100

Alice IsaacsMrs. Alice W. (Willis) Isaacs, a resident of Medford for more than 75 years and beloved wife of the late Walter A. Isaacs, died at the Glen Ridge Nursing Center in Medford on Tuesday, October 11, 2011. She was 100 years old.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 8, 1911, she was the beloved daughter of the late Lee R. and Lillian R. (Hogan) Willis.

Mrs. Isaacs was a graduate of Cambridge High & Latin and worked as a Clerk at Medford City Hall for many years. Alice was an avid reader and in her spare time also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She volunteered her knitting skill set to the Guideposts Magazine Knit for Kids International Sweater Program – donating her hand knitted and crocheted sweaters to children around the globe.

She was an active member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in West Medford, MA. She served as assistant superintendent, teacher and pianist of the church’s Sunday school. She was also a member of the Queen Esther Circle and the West Medford Community Senior Center.

Alice and her husband Walter had been homeowners and summer residents at 115 Dukes County Road, Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard. While there, they attended the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven. She dearly loved spending time on island at the Isaacs family cottage.

Mrs. Isaacs had been a long time member of the American Baptist Women. She also was a former member of the Tufts University History Project of African Americans.

She will be sorely missed by her loving daughter and son, Cynthia M. Isaacs of Medford and Walter L. and his wife, Jayne C. Isaacs of Danbury, Connecticut. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Miles D. Thrash (West Medford, MA), Steven Thrash (West Medford, MA), Leslie E. Isaacs McCoy (Atlanta, GA), Peter H. Isaacs (Templeton, MA), Emory L. Isaacs (Waterbury, CT.), Garrett D. Isaacs (Danbury, CT), Aaron W. Isaacs (West Hartford, CT) and Mahlori B. Isaacs (Bethesda, MD); seven great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Evelyn Isaacs and Marie Isaacs and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was also the devoted sister of the late George E. Willis.

Her funeral service will be celebrated in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday, prior to the service, from 9 to 11 AM. Interment will be in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the West Medford Community Center, 111 Arlington Street, West Medford, Massachusetts 02155.
