Future of Tufts, W. Medford PO’s in Question

In an effort to save costs the US Postal Service has been closing locations across the country. The Postal Service is now considering closing branches at Tufts University and in West Medford.

The USPS will be conducting a public hearing to receive feedback from those affected by the potential closings. On Wednesday, October 12 a public hearing will be conducted in Medford at the public library. The hearing is taking place from 6:00-7:30PM in the Magoun Room of the library, which is located at 111 High Street.

In addition to the hearing, a survey has been sent in the mail to Medford residents.

According to retired Medford school principal Marie Rizzo, thousands of Medford residents have signed a petition to keep the West Medford Post Office branch open.

Sources familiar with the Post Office said the troubled service is billions in debt and is projecting to close thousands of branches across the country. According to one local source, closing the West Medford branch “would be very difficult,” and the branch actually made $300,000 in profit last year.
