AC XC Opens Season with Victory

The Arlington Catholic boys and girls cross country team opened up their season with a decisive victory over arch rival Bishop Fenwick on Tuesday. The Cougars also defeated Catholic Central League newcomer St. Mary’s of Lynn on their home course of Menotomy Rocks Park in Arlington.

The Lady Cougars are the defending league champions, having gone undefeated the past two seasons. They put away Fenwick by a score of 24 to 34 (low score wins) and beat St. Mary’s 15 to 50.

The Lady Cougars placed five of their runners in the top eight, with junior Janelle Solviletti (Billerica) crossing the line first for AC in second place. Sophomore Kaitlin McCauley (Watertown) was third, senior Brigid Kirkpatrick (Medford) placed fifth, junior Lauren O’Neil (Stoneham) was sixth, and senior Becca Gonsalves (Woburn) was eighth in the race. Senior Mary Stanton (9th, Waltham), freshman Kathleen McLaughlin (11th, Waltham), sophomore Olivia Liberti (13th, Medford), senior Lauren Orsillo (14th, Woburn), and sophomore Jess Higgins (19th, Peabody) rounded out the top ten runners for the AC squad.

The boys team earned an especially satisfying 23-34 victory over Fenwick after losing to them for the league title last season. The Cougars also defeated St. Mary’s by a score of 15 to 49.

Junior Kevin Connors of Belmont led the way for AC, finishing second overall. The team’s top five runners finished in the top seven places. Senior Kyle Liberti (Medford) was third, senior Nolan Hart (Medford) placed fifth, Chris Laffey (Billerica) was sixth, and junior Matt Woods (Arlington) was seventh. Senior Nick Nowell (10th, Burlington), junior Alan Judd (11th, Burlington), senior Joe Buccheri (13th, Medford), sophomore Cory Egan (17th), and sophomore Mike Kumar (18th, Medford) rounded out the top ten finishers for the Cougars.

MThe Arlington Catholic Girls and Boys got Cross Country Teams got off to a strong start to the 2011 Catholic Central League season by defeating both the Boys and Girls teams of arch rival Bishop Fenwick and League newcomer St Mary’s of Lynn at Menotomy park in Arlington.

The 2 time undefeated defending League Champion Cougar girls beat the Fenwick Girls by a score of 24 to 34 and the St Mary’s team by a score 15 to 50.

The Cougar Boy’s after a 2nd place finish in the CCL last season behind defending League Champion Bishop Fenwick got some satisfaction by scoring a 23 to 34 victory and also defeating St Mary’s by a score of 15 to 49.

Next up for the boys and girls cross country teams is a trip to Chelmsford to race Lowell Catholic and Marian on Tuesday.
