Volleyball Team Earns Home Victory

The Lady Mustang Volleyball team took a hard-played, 3-2 victory over Arlington High School in the first home game of the season last Thursday. After dropping the first two sets of the match 25-19 and 25-21, Medford battled back to win the last three sets 25-18, 25-22, and 15-13, according to Head Coach Alice Beth FitzPatrick.

The team was led by a “very strong performance” by senior Michelle Nguyen, who had five kills as a middle hitter and seven service aces. Senior Kelly Hayes, another middle hitter, stepped up big as well, contributing four kills, including the kill for match point.

Several Lady Mustangs helped in the come-from-behind victory, including senior outside hitters Rachel Keen, Kathryn Ellersick, Rayann Staude, and Daniella Lindemeyer, each contributing two kills. Senior defensive specialist Katie Bowler delivered a strong serving performance, including two service aces while junior Katie Napier added one kill and four service aces. Other juniors making a mark were JoAnn Paul, with three kills, and Lydia Reagan, with two kills and two aces. Leading these players to their offensive success was senior setter Christine Feeley, who also helped the team with two kills and four aces, said Coach FitzPatrick.

The Mustangs’ next match is on Wednesday at Pope John in Everett. Medford then hosts Arlington Catholic on Friday, September 16. JV and Freshmen play at 4:00pm and Varsity will take the court after 5:15pm.
