Remembering 9/11

Ground Zero c. 2005Medford resident and photographer Doug Shoop snapped this photo of Ground Zero on a family trip in 2005.

The steel beam is a remnant of one of the World Trade Center towers and it was located just outside of a subway exit, according to Shoop.

The beam evokes the image of a cross, causing people to stop and reflect at the site.

“It was very moving just to be there. Most people were quiet at this location,” said Shoop.

At that point in time there was still a giant hole in the ground at the site, which now, ten years later, is home to a memorial, museum, and new buildings.

Shoop, an architect, said “it’s refreshing to see the new structures rise from the ground.”
