Route 93 Bridge Replacement Update August 1-5
Delays, Detours Anticipated for Monday-Friday
Bridge Construction to Take Place August 5-8
Construction crews will be back this weekend to replace the bridge that carries Route 93 South over Riverside Avenue. The northbound bridge construction, which took place in June, is pictured above.
I-93 construction activities associated with the replacement of fourteen deteriorated bridge superstructures in Medford this summer continues next week.
The ninth weekend of bridge replacements will focus on the Route I-93 South bridge over Riverside Avenue. That work will take place between 8:00 PM Friday, August 5th and 5:00 AM Monday, August 8th. A separate advisory will be issued for this event.
Next week, the following weekday work activities and related lane closures are scheduled to occur:
Route I-93 Northbound
– Single right lane closure between Exit 29 (Routes 28/38) and Exit 33 (Route 28) on Monday, August 1 through Thursday, August 4 between 9 AM and 2 PM and on Friday, August 5 between 9 AM and 12 noon.
– Single left lane closure between Exit 31 (Route 16) and Exit 32 (Route 60) on Monday, August 1 between 8 PM and 5 AM.
– Double left lane closures between Exit 29 (Routes 28/38) and Exit 33 (Route 28) on Tuesday, August 2 through Thursday, August 4 between 8 PM and 5 AM.
Route I-93 Southbound
– Single right lane closure between Exit 33 (Route 28) and Exit 31 (Route 16) Monday, August 1 through Thursday, August 4 between 10 AM and 3 PM and on Friday, August 5 between 10 AM and 12 noon.
– Double left lane closures between Exit 33 (Roosevelt Circle – Route 28/Fellsway) and Exit 31 (Route 16) on Monday, August 1 through Thursday, August 4 between 8 PM and 5 AM.
Local Roadways & Waterways
Riverside Avenue
– Shoulder closures on Monday, August 1 through Thursday, August 4 between 7 AM and 5 PM. Provisions for pedestrian access will be maintained.
– Single lane or shoulder closures on Tuesday, August 2 between 9 PM and 5 AM. Provisions for pedestrian access will be maintained.
– Full closure of Riverside Avenue in the area beneath I-93 beginning on Friday, August 5 at 6:00 PM and continuing through Monday, August 8 at 5 AM.
Salem Street/Route 60 (East and West)
– Shoulder closures on Monday, August 1 through Friday, August 5 between 7 AM and 5 PM. Provisions for pedestrian access will be maintained.
Route 16
– Varying lane and shoulder closures on Monday, August 1 through Friday, August 5 between 7 AM and 5 PM. A single travel lane will be provided on Route 16 in each direction in the area beneath the bridge beginning at 9 AM in the eastbound direction and at 10 AM in the westbound direction. Provisions for pedestrian access will be maintained.
Valley Street/Route 28 South (Fellsway)
– Shoulder closures on Monday, August 1 through Friday, August 5 between 7 AM and 5 PM. Provisions for pedestrian access will be maintained. The section of Valley Street beneath I-93 may be closed during these periods depending on the specific activities being undertaken and the associated work zone requirements.
Mystic River
– Barge placement and periodic movement within the Mystic River will reduce the navigable channel on Monday, August 1 through Monday, August 8.
Webster Street
– Single lane or shoulder closures on Monday, August 1 through Friday, August 5 between 7 AM and 5 PM. Webster Street eastbound traffic may be detoured or restricted during these periods depending on the specific activities being undertaken and the associated work zone requirements. If an eastbound detour is not implemented, alternating one way traffic will be used. Provisions for pedestrian access will be maintained.
MassDOT encourages drivers and marine traffic to allow extra time for their trips and to reduce speed and use caution when travelling through or adjacent to all work zones.
