Rep. Sciortino Named Legislator of the Year

Rep. Sciortino with other award winnersOn June 28th the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW MA) honored Representative Carl M. Sciortino, Jr. (D-Medford) as the 2011 Legislator of the Year.

Representative Sciortino works closely with NASW on legislation and policies that are important to social workers and those they work with, including social worker safety in the workplace, improving coordination of children’s mental health services, establishing paid sick days, providing in-state tuition to immigrant high school graduates, protecting transgender people from discrimination and violence, and working to secure housing for low-income families.

“Since he has been in office, Representative Sciortino has been a true ally for social work values and the NASW-MA legislative agenda,” said Carol Trust, Executive Director of NASW MA. “We were thrilled to recognize his efforts last week on behalf of the children and families, as well as the social workers, of Massachusetts.”

“I am honored to have received this award from NASW,” said Representative Carl Sciortino. “We share a commitment to issues of social and economic justice and have fought side by side to raise the minimum wage and close corporate tax loopholes.”
