City Council Meeting Tuesday, July 12

Hormel Stadium Field, Dogs at Wright’s Pond to be Discussed

The Medford City Council, following a lighter summer schedule, will meet for the month of July on Tuesday, July 12. The meeting will take place at 7:00PM at Medford City Hall.

Prior to their regular meeting, the Council will hold a Committee of the Whole Meeting at 6:00PM to discuss a “Wireless Communications Zoning Ordinance.” That meeting will take place in Room 207.

During the regular meeting the Council will consider a request from Mayor Michael McGlynn for the city to apply for a $500,000 from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation to renovate the athletic field at Hormel Stadium. According to the Mayor, the grant is reimbursable and the city is asking for the maximum amount.

Also on the agenda is a proposed amendment to city ordinances regarding dogs and their waste at city parks and recreation areas, especially Wright’s Pond. The change has been recommended by City Public Health Director Karen Rose.

Chapter 62 Section 95 of the Revised Ordinances of the City of Medford currently reads as follows:

“No person shall permit a dog or animal owned by him to run free at any park or playground. The owner of any animal in a park or playground shall be responsible for picking up any waste material deposited by said animal. There shall be a fine of $200.00 for violation of this section.”

The proposed change is as follows:

“No person owning, harboring or having custody or control of a dog or animal shall permit said dog or animal to run free at any park or playground. A person owning, harboring or having custody or control of a dog or animal in a park or playground shall be responsible for picking up any waste material deposited by said dog or animal. No dogs or animals shall be allowed on the grounds or in the water at Wright’s Pond at anytime, with the exception of a service animal. There shall be a fine of $200.00 for violation of this section. The provisions of this section may be enforced by any City of Medford Police Officer, City Animal Control Officer or the Director of Public Health or her designee.”

The Council’s regular meeting will be broadcast live on Channel 16 starting at 7:00PM and will be replayed later in the week on Channel 15.
