American Legion Baseball Opens Season with Win

Medford High 2011 graduate and baseball captain Chris Salvati helped lead his American Legion team to victory.

The Medford Post 45 American Legion baseball team opened up their 2011 season with a 6-0 shutout victory over Watertown on Friday at Playstead Park.

Medford High 2011 graduate and baseball captain Chris Salvati led the team on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout while striking out seven.

Medford High 2011 graduate and baseball captain Danny Gilchrist was 3-4 with two RBI’s while Salvati was 2-3 with an RBI. Other Mustang baseball players contributed to the victory, with Pat Duffy slamming a solo home run and Nick Rocco with a key bunt single that started a five run second inning. Medford resident and Malden Catholic junior Paul Covelle was 1-2 with an RBI.

Medford is in the middle of a four game homestand. The team was beating league power Weston 6-1 in the third inning before the game was postponed by rain. Medford will welcome perennial state powers Newton and Sudbury to Playstead on June 14th and 16th. First pitch against Newton is at 5:45PM on Tuesday at Playstead Park.
