Pellechia Leads Softball Team Over Cambridge

– Allison Goldsberry

After losing games to Greater Boston League power houses Everett and Malden, the Medford Lady Mustangs bounced back by defeating the Cambridge Falcons 11-5 behind the “big bat of junior sensation Jackie Pellecchia” on Friday, according to Head Coach Jack Dempsey.

Pellechia hit for the cycle (single, double, triple, and homerun). She also scored two runs, drove home two more, and is currently the number two hitter in the GBL. Pellechia’s .515 average is second only to teammate and senior captain Kasey Moran’s league-leading .556.

Senior captain Sarah Moulton banged out two hits and drove home two while junior Shannon Hussey contributed two hits. Junior Rayanne Staude picked up her third victory on the mound. She struck out five opposing batters and “played stellar defense on the mound” with five assist. Senior captain Kristina Bove, junior Emily Welch, freshman Sarah Donnelly, and sophomores Sam Lopilato and Christina Lynch each contributed a base hit.

The local nines’ record now stands at seven wins and three losses, said Coach Dempsey.

The upcoming week is huge for the Mustangs, who host Somerville on Thursday, travel to Revere for a 7PM game under the lights Friday, and host Framingham on Saturday at 10AM.

The team is also planning a “Fun Day” event on Saturday, May 14 that will include a youth softball clinic, a homerun derby, a barbecue, contests, and raffles. The event is taking place from 3-6PM on the fields behind Medford High and will be in the gym if it’s raining. The cost to participate in the youth clinic is $10.
