Baseball Team Shuts Out Malden

– Allison Goldsberry

The Mustang varsity baseball team improved its record to 8-2 with a 4-0 shut out victory over Malden on Thursday.

Head Coach Mike Nestor praised the team for its defensive efforts, saying the Mustangs displayed “the best defense of the year.”

“We’ve been really aggressive lately going after the ball when it’s been hit,” said Coach Nestor.

That kind of defense wasn’t evident against the Golden Tornadoes when the Mustangs lost to them on the road earlier in the season, so Coach Nestor was pleased his team didn’t give up a run this time.

Senior Danny Gilchrist pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits and striking out nine. Offensively “everybody hit,” with Pat Duffy and Chris Hayes leading the Mustangs. Duffy was 3-3 with two RBI’s while Hayes was 2-3 with two RBI’s.

Next week Medford hosts Framingham on Tuesday and is on the road against Somerville on Thursday and Framingham on Saturday.

Coach Nestor also wanted to thank everyone who supported the team’s Drive 1 4 UR School test drive fundraising event with Sentry Ford Lincoln of Medford.
