Mustang Softball Wins 1, Loses 1

– Allison Goldsberry

With rain keeping the varsity softball team in a holding pattern for two weeks, the Mustangs bounced back with a 16-6 on-the-road victory over Somerville on Monday but fell to Everett 12-5 on Tuesday.

Against Somerville Medford was powered by the “booming bat” of junior Jackie Pellecchia, who slammed two homeruns and collected six RBI’s, and “speedster” senior captain Kasey Moran, who was 5-5 with three bunts, two slaps, two RBI’s, and four runs scored, according to Head Coach Jack Dempsey.

The Mustangs were up 6-5 in the third inning when Pellecchia unloaded a tremendous homerun to right center field that drove home two runs. In the fifth inning Pellechia slammed her second blast, a three run shot well over the left fielder’s head that ultimately put the game out of reach for the Somerville Highlanders.

Junior Shannon Hussey chipped in with two hits and “sweet swinging” sophomore Sam LoPilato added two hits, two RBI’s, and two runs scored. Senior captain Kristina Bove banged out one hit and also picked up the win on the mound, improving her record to 4-1. Senior captains Sarah Moulton and Victoria Luongo each had a hit and a run scored. Also smacking a hit each were junior Emily Welch, freshman Sarah Donnelly, and sophomores Christina Lynch, Jackie Smock, and Katie Napier.

Medford is currently 6-2 with four big Greater Boston League games this week with Somerville, Everett, Cambridge, and Malden. Medford is on the road against Cambridge on Wednesday and Malden on Thursday.

The team is also planning a “Fun Day” event on Saturday, May 14 that will include a youth softball clinic, a homerun derby, a barbecue, contests, and raffles. The event is taking place from 3-6PM on the fields behind Medford High and will be in the gym if it’s raining. The cost to participate in the youth clinic is $10.
