Softball Team Earns On-the-Road Victory Over Arlington

The varsity girls softball team won a wild shootout with the Arlington
Spy Ponders at Arlington High School on Tuesday afternoon. The Mustangs held on for the 13-11 victory after coming from behind three different times.

The local nine erupted for four runs to take a 5-4 lead after trailing 4-1 in the fourth inning. Senior captain Kasey Moran contributed a key hit that drove home two Mustang runners. In the fifth inning the Lady Mustangs bounced back from an 8-5 deficit by scoring six runs, with junior Shannon Hussey banging out a key two-run double. Medford was up 11-8 but Arlington tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth. Senior captain Kristina Bove led the seventh inning off with a bunt single followed by a single by junior Jackie Pellecchia, putting runners on first and second. Senior captain Sarah Moulton executed a perfect bunt that was mishandled by the Spy Ponders’ infield that produced the game-winning run.

The Lady Mustangs’ four senior captains were instrumental in the victory, said Head Coach Jack Dempsey. Moran had four hits and four RBI’s, Bove went 3 for 5 with a run scored, catcher Victoria Luongo was 3 for 5 with a stolen base, and Moulton was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.

Hussey contributed three hits, two RBI’s, and a run scored, Pellecchia had two hits and two runs scored, Emily Welch added a triple and two runs scored, and Rayanne Staude had a hit and the victory pitching. Sophomore Sam Lopilato closed out the hitting attack with two hits and two runs scored for a total of twenty-one hits for the Mustangs.

Medford’s record now stands at 3 and 0. The next game is at Framingham on Friday at 4 pm.
