The Medford varsity softball team opened their 2011 season with an impressive 10-4 victory over the Spy Ponders of Arlington at home on Friday.

The Lady Mustangs were led by senior captain Kristina Bove, who pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out two, while contributing two hits and an RBI, and the powerful bat of junior shortstop Jackie Pellechia, who added a double, single, and four RBI’s.

The Medford girls exploded out of the box, with their first four batters of the game hitting safely and scoring in the first inning, including a bases-clearing double by Pellechia. The second inning was almost as productive, with a three-run outburst led by a Bove RBI single and a Pellecchia shot driving in a run as well, said Head Coach Jack Dempsey.

Other Lady Mustangs contributing to the hitting attack included senior captains Kasey Moran (a hit, walk and stolen base) and Victoria Luongo (two base hits and an RBI). Also chipping in with one hit apiece were juniors Emily Welch and Shannon Hussey, sophomores Sam Lopilato and Kristina Lynch, and freshman Sarah Donnelly.

Senior captain Sarah Moulton, Emily Welch, Pellecchia, and Lopilato led the Mustang defense.

The Lady Mustangs’ next game will be Monday at Tufts Park against a strong Revere nine.
