Mustang Baseball Opens Season with Victories

The Mustang varsity baseball team is off to a strong 2-0 start on the season with victories over Matignon and Winchester.

Senior Chris Salvati led the Mustangs on the mound against Matignon on Tuesday, striking out fifteen in Medford’s 6-3 on-the-road victory.

On Wednesday Medford opened up at home against the Sachems of Winchester with senior Danny Gilchrist tossing a complete game and striking out thirteen.

“Chris and Gil have really stepped up to the plate and showed the underclassmen how to play,” said Head Coach Mike Nestor.

Salvati stole home- twice- against Winchester, including the game’s winning run, while Gilchrist slammed a solo homerun to put Medford up 3-1.

Two underclassmen, sophomore Sean Doncaster and Nick Rocco, got things started for Medford in the second inning. Doncaster opened things up with a double while Rocco, filling big shoes this season as the team’s catcher, drove in the first run of the game by bringing Doncaster home on a single.

Rocco was 3-3 with an RBI and a stolen base; Gilchrist was 3-4 with a homerun and RBI; and Salvati was 1-2 with two RBI’s and two stolen bases.

Salvati will take the mound on Monday when the Mustangs host Waltham at Playstead Park at 4:00PM.

In JV Baseball news, the Mustangs are off to a good start with a 15-0 victory over Matignon on Tuesday and a 2-2 tie against Winchester on Wednesday. Sophomore Jacob Scannell threw a shut out game against the Matignon Warriors, striking out seven. Junior Grant Martignetti started against Winchester, pitching seven innings with two unearned runs and eight strikeouts. Sophomore Anthony Brown pitched three innings of relief, striking out two and giving up no runs.

According to JV Coach Josh Glionna, in both games sophomore second baseman Sam Naso went 3-3 and led the offense. He is 6-6 so far on the season with three RBI’s.
