Medford Native Appointed as a Federal Judge

Medford native Sandra Klein has been appointed as a US federal judge, serving as a Federal United States Bankruptcy Judge in California.

Klein attended the former Gleason Elementary School and former Hobbs Junior High School before graduating from Medford High in 1978. She attended Ithaca College before transferring to UMass-Lowell, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1982. Klein worked for NYNEX for a few years teaching computer systems before deciding to attend law school. She attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and graduated in the top third of her class in 1992.

Klein clerked for three years after law school for two federal judges before becoming a Special Assistant to the US Attorney in LA, a position she held for six years. She then went on to become the Bankruptcy Fraud Criminal Coordinator and the Acting Chief of the Criminal Enforcement Unit under the United States Justice Department. Klein decided to go back to school to get her MBA, which she did while working and attending the Executive MBA program at UCLA, earning the degree in 2009.

“We think it is so special for a young woman who is a product of Medford and the Medford Public School system to have reached this level in the judiciary,” said her parents Judy and Dave in an email.

Klein lives in California with her husband and has “many of fond memories of Medford,” and according to her mother, Judy, she visits whenever time permits.
