Prep Work Continues March 21-March 25

Work crews will continue construction activities in preparation for the upcoming replacement of fourteen deteriorated bridge superstructures on Route I-93 in Medford. The primary work activities next week will take place Monday, March 21 through Friday, March 25 from 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

The following work activities and related lane closures are scheduled to occur:

Route I-93 Southbound

Installation of moveable precast concrete barrier beginning in the area prior to Exit 33 (Route 28) near the Stoneham/Medford line and proceeding southerly. This activity will require the closure of the two left lanes in the general area of the work. The first lane will be closed at approximately 8:00 PM and the second left lane will be closed at 9:00 PM.

Route I-93 Northbound

Installation of temporary highway lighting in the area of the northern median crossover beyond Exit 33 (Route 28) near the Medford/Stoneham line. This activity is expected to commence mid week and will require the closure of the right travel lane in the general area of the work.

Work crews will be completing highway lighting improvements as part of a separate project in isolated areas between Exit 29 (Routes 28/38) and Exit 33 (Route 28). The work will occur Sunday, March 20 through Thursday, March 24 from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. This activity will require the closure of the two right lanes in the general area of the work. The first lane will be closed at approximately 8:00 PM and the second right lane will be closed at 9:00 PM.

Local Roadways

Survey work and site investigation will take place in the areas beneath the I-93 bridges included in the project. These activities will occur Monday, March 21 through Friday, March 25 from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and may require periodic lane or shoulder closures.

Appropriate signs, channelizing devices and traffic control measures will be used to guide drivers through the work zones.

MassDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time for their trips and to reduce speed and use caution when travelling through all work zones.

The $98.1 million project to replace these fourteen bridge superstructures in Medford is funded through the Patrick-Murray Administration’s historic Accelerated Bridge Program, a $3 billion recovery effort to reduce the Commonwealth’s backlog of structurally-deficient bridges.
