Mustang Cheerleaders Head to State Tournament

MHS Cheerleaders

The Medford High School Varsity Cheerleaders are preparing to head to the MSSAA Winter State Cheerleading Tournament on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Wachusett Regional High School. The Mustangs earned this opportunity by placing third this past Sunday at the MSSAA North Regional Cheerleading Tournament held at Andover High School.

“The MHS Cheerleading program, while very successful in the past, has been hit with numerous injuries over the past 2 years, rendering the program unable to compete. My goal for the winter season was to get the team back out onto the mat. They have worked so hard, some of them for the past two years really, and that hard work finally paid off as they placed second to Somerville in the Greater Boston League Championship three weeks ago at St. Mary’s of Lynn. They earned enough points at St Mary’s to qualify for the North Regional Competition this past Sunday.”

“Yesterday, they hit the mat at Andover High, completing their routine almost flawlessly, and ended up placing third in the North Region. I am so proud of this team, as they just never gave up. It was truly a team effort to make it out of this competition as the other teams in our division had much more difficulty, especially in the tumbling section of the scoresheet. But, the combination of having a creative routine and the girls hitting their skills put them over the top! We are proud to be able to represent Medford High School at the State Final,” said 3rd year Head Coach Melissa Pothier.

Lowell High School won Division I with a score of 176.25, Greater Lowell Technical High School placed second with a score of 174 and Medford High was third with a score of 160.75.

Members of the Mustang Cheerleading team include: Captain Jessica Albano, Emily Traniello, Christina Bramante, Tina Aiello, Brianna Dalessandro, Mikayla DeRienzo, Nicole Dello Russo, Andrea Galicia, Jules Clancy, Hailee Centrella, Brianna Hardy, Stephanie Silva, Catharina Jules, Daniella Colozzo, Sabrina Joachin, Lahela Helleberg, and Brooke Hanley. The girls are coached by Pothier, Kaitlyn Contardo and Lisa Evangelista.
