After winning four straight, the Mustang varsity basketball team suffered a tough loss to Billerica on Friday night at home.

Medford was missing two key players, Dan Gilchrist and Owen Healey, who dislocated his thumb during the game. The Mustangs were down by fourteen points at the half and weren’t able to overcome the deficit.

On Thursday Medford enjoyed its fourth straight win with a 72-67 victory over Malden.

Sophomore Sean Doncaster led the team with nineteen points and junior Maurice Magras added seventeen. Both Doncaster and Magras hit 5-6 from the free throw line while Larry Keating was 4-4.

“I thought Larry Keating really did a great job for us on the glass and playing in the middle of their zone. He did a really good job taking care of the ball and kicking it back out when their zone collapsed on him,” said Coach Faradie.

“I should also note that someone seems to always step up and make big plays for us, especially lately. Anthony Tortora hit three 3-point shots in this game and had nine points. He really hit some big shots at key times,” said Coach Faradie.

The Mustangs are currently 8-10 and need to win both of their remaining two games to qualify for the state tournament. On Monday, February 21, Senior Night, Medford hosts Stoneham and then the Mustangs take a trip to Sharon on Wednesday, February 23 to wrap up the regular season.
