Plows, dump trucks, and a special piece of snow-clearing equipment were seen Wednesday morning around the city breaking up snow banks and widening the streets. Five major snow storms in December and January have dumped several feet of snow on the area, leaving streets narrow and nearly impassable for more than one car at a time. According to city DPW Commissioner Jack Buckley, the machine the city is using to cut through the snow is called the Sicard Sno-Go and it was used extensively in 1978 to “open up” Medford’s streets after the historic blizzard of ’78. Buckley said the machine can cut a three-foot path through the snow on both sides of the street to help vehicles more safely pass. It has also been used to clear space on the MHS practice fields to make room for piles of snow that are dumped there from different locations around the city. Buckley said DPW workers are moving around the city over the next few days to continue with the snow clearing.
