Medford Student Joins Gov, Others for Service Day

Matthew Beckshaw and Governor Patrick

McGlynn Middle School eighth grader Matthew Beckshaw recently joined hundreds of other students from across the state in a day of community service with Governor Deval Patrick.

Beckshaw spent his day volunteering at the Blackstone Elementary School, a turnaround school in Boston’s South End, where the students painted a new welcoming resource center for parents.

According to information released by the Governor, Lt. Governor Tim Murray, Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics, Kevin Faulk and Brandon McGowan of the New England Patriots, and Jay Heaps, formerly of the New England Revolution, also participated.

This event was organized by the Patrick-Murray Inaugural Committee and took place on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to help honor his legacy of service.

“Project 351 is designed to inspire, challenge, and motivate our next generation of learners and leaders to give back and make a significant impact on the community,” said Governor Patrick. “As we serve together, we join thousands of citizens across the nation honoring Dr. King’s example.”

“Together, these amazing students are building bonds of friendship that span the Commonwealth, while impacting the lives of over 10,000 children,” said Lt. Governor Murray.

School superintendents and principals selected the youth Ambassadors based on their strong ethic of service to represent each of the state’s 351 cities and towns.
