Girls Hoops Undefeated in League

– Allison Goldsberry

The 7-2 Lady Mustang basketball team, led by Head Coach Leo Burke, is currently undefeated in the Greater Boston League with three wins.

The team’s most recent victory was a 58-50 battle with GBL rival Cambridge on Wednesday in the Falcon’s territory. Junior captain Tania Holmes led the Mustangs with seventeen points and Emily Welch added ten points and eight rebounds in Medford’s close victory over Cambridge, according to Coach Burke. Medford pulled out the win despite being down seven points at the half and held Cambridge to just five points in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs earned another tough on the road victory against Somerville last week. Medford beat the Highlanders 56-50 in a come-from-behind win. The Mustangs were led by freshman Sarah Donnelly, who had nineteen points and shot 12-16 from the foul line. The Mustangs overcame a seven point deficit at halftime to post the victory.

Senior captain Kasey Moran had another stellar night, adding ten points and hustling all over the defensive side of the ball, said Coach Burke. Juniors Jackie Pellecchia and Holmes each chipped in with twelve.

“The girls came out in the second half and really stepped it up on the defensive end,” said Coach Burke.

Medford’s recent victory over Everett was much more decisive, with the Mustangs soundly trouncing the Crimson Tide 70-53. Holmes let the Lady Mustangs with twenty-seven points on 6 for 8 shooting from 3-point land. Medford came out firing on all cylinders with a 42-18 lead at the half, said Coach Burke. Moran did an outstanding job on Everett’s point guard, Torrie Cyrus, keeping her in check all night.

“Kasey is my defensive stopper, she is always giving us 100% effort,” said Coach Burke.

The total team effort included Alleah McAusland Ace coming off the bench to spark the offense in the first quarter with seven points. Donnelly continued her improvement on both ends of the floor with ten points and eight rebounds. Pellechia contributed in the scoring with six points and senior Lindsey Bandoin had five points and four rebounds.

The Mustangs host the Golden Tornadoes of Malden on Friday, January 20. Frosh take the court at 4PM, followed by the junior varsity team at 5:30PM and the varsity team at 7PM.
