School Committee Selects New Leadership

Last week the Medford School Committee selected new leadership for 2011. Veteran members Paulette Van der Kloot and Ann Marie Cugno passed the reins to School Committee freshmen George Scarpelli and John Falco.

Scarpelli replaces Van der Kloot as Vice Chair. Mayor Michael McGlynn is the School Committee Chair and leads the meetings, which the Vice Chair does in the Mayor’s absence. Falco will take over as Secretary, a position held by Cugno, and will take meeting notes and sign off on school department bills.

George Scarpelli“First let me take this time to thank Paulette and Ann Marie. They have taken a new School Committee and guided us in the right direction. I feel this is a great honor in being voted in as Vice Chair for the upcoming year by my fellow committee members. We have many challenging issues ahead of us but I feel that we will meet all challenges head on and work tenaciously to reach our shared goals for the students and citizens of the of the City of Medford,” said Scarpelli.

John Falco“I am honored that my colleagues have shown me their confidence and support in electing me secretary of the Medford School Committee. I am eager to assume my new responsibilities as I know it will provide me an unique opportunity to learn more about the financial workings of the Medford Public School system,” said Falco.

Scarpelli and Falco were elected to the School Committee in November 2009. They were among four newly-elected members. The men will serve in their respective leadership positions until the term expires in January 2012. The next School Committee election will be held in November of this year.
