The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the eastern part of the state for most of Wednesday due to a storm expected to dump over a foot of snow.

Tweleve to sixteen inches of snow are forecast for the area, with the worst of the storm occurring late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Snow could fall as much as two to three inches per hour.

The blizzard warning is in effect from 2AM to 8PM Wednesday.

“Hazardous” travel conditions with “poor visibility” are anticipated during that time. Visibility could only be a quarter to a half mile during the height of the storm, with sustained winds of twenty to thirty miles per hour and gusts up to forty-five miles per hour.

School has been cancelled for Wednesday and Thursday in Medford and many other area communities. All school activities, including practices and games, that were scheduled for both days have been cancelled and the School Committee support services sub-committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed until further notice.

Tufts University has also closed each of its three campuses for Wednesday.

A snow emergency has been issued in Medford as of midnight, which means no parking on designated emergency arteries and parking only on the even side of the street until the snow emergency is lifted.

The following are considered emergency arteries:

Boston Avenue, Central Avenue, College Avenue from George Street to Boston Avenue, Forest Street, Fulton Street, George Street, Governors Avenue, Grove Street, Hancock Street, Harvard Avenue, Harvard Street, High Street, Lawrence Road, Main Street, Medford Street, Mystic Avenue from Main Street to Crescent Street, Playstead Road, Riverside Avenue, Salem Street, Spring Street, Washington Street, Webster Street, Willis Avenue, Winthrop Street and Woburn Street.

Trash pick-up will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week, with Wednesday’s being pushed to Thursday, Thursday to Friday, and Friday to Saturday.

The storm would be the first major one of 2011 after 2010 closed with a near-blizzard that brought over a foot of snow to Medford.
