Greater Boston League rivals Medford and Everett duked it out on Saturday in the preliminary round of the state tournament and the Mustangs eventually emerged with a 2-1 victory over the Crimson Tide.

The first two goals of the game, one for Medford and one for Everett, were scored early and the game was tied 1-1 at the half. Both teams’ defensive efforts were strong but Medford dominated in the second half and shut down Everett’s offense.

Senior captain David Pires scored the Mustangs’ first goal in the third minute of the game and freshman Matheus Anastacio scored within the last minutes of the game.

Medford, 12-2-5, plays Brighton (12-3-1) on the road at Charlestown High at 5:30PM on Monday.

The only other GBL team still standing is Somerville (10-5-4). Cambridge was knocked out by Framingham and Malden by Acton-Boxboro. The Highlanders beat Community Academy on Saturday, 6-0, and play at Madison Park on Monday afternoon. Madison Park, 14-0-1, is the top seed in the division. If Medford and Somerville both win on Monday they will end up playing each other in the quarter finals.
