The Mustang varsity volleyball team pulled out back to back victories this weekend and still managed to squeeze in a “serve-a-thon” that raised money for breast cancer research.

On Friday the girls defeated Malden, 3-2. Junior Davielle Pierrette helped bring the team to victory with nine service points and two kills. The win improved Medford’s GBL record to 4-4.

On Saturday the Lady Mustangs made hundreds of serves in a special fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

On Monday the Mustangs successfully defended their home turf with a 3-1 victory over Arlington High on Senior Night.

After a rocky first set, losing 25-18, the team came back strong to take the next three, 26-24, 25-19, and 25-23. Senior captain Jen Uang led the team with 15 service points including 6 aces. Other seniors who led the team with their strong serving performances were Stephanie Nguyen with 7 service points and 3 aces; Marisa Fouraux with 5 service points and 1 ace; Pierrette with 5 service points and 3 aces; and Mady Forcier with 3 service points and 1 ace.

Offensively the seniors took charge as well with Maggie Tobin getting 3 kills, Fouraux with 7 kills, Uang and Pierrette with 4 kills each, and Kathleen Harding and Forcier with 2 kills each against the Spy Ponders, said Head Coach Alice Beth FitzPatrick.

Juniors also stepped up big in this match with strong defense and offense to help bring home a win for the Mustangs. Rachel Keen had 3 service points, 5 kills and 1 block. Christine Feely had 9 service points including 2 aces. Also, Kelly Hayes teamed up with senior middle Harding to get a big block during the first set.

The Mustangs finished 3rd overall in the Greater Boston League with a 4-4 record. Their overall record with 2 matches left to play in the season is 5-12.

“The team has faced some strong competition this season and has become a stronger group of players because of it. They are playing very strong volleyball at this point in the season and are looking forward to playing for the GBL Cup on Thursday and Friday of this week. The Mustangs won the cup last year and are hoping to repeat that success,” said Coach FitzPatrick.
