Medford is among four communities being recognized by Governor Deval Patrick’s administration for environmentally friendly initiatives.

The “Lead by Example” award is given to communities that have implemented recycling, successfully reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and that have taken other steps to improve overall environmental quality at public facilities. These actions support Governor Patrick’s 2007 Executive Order directing state government to improve energy efficiency, pursue clean energy technologies, and reduce environmental impact, said a statement from the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

Northampton, Greenfield, and Mashpee are also being recognized, as well as UMass-Amherst, UMass Medical School, the state Department of Transportation and the Department of Fire Services.

The awards are being presented on Tuesday morning at the State House. Mayor Michael McGlynn and city Environmental Agent Carey Duques are attending the presentation.
