Mustang Volleyball Kicks off Fall Season

The Mustangs Volleyball Program started out the 2010 fall sports season with a great turn out of 65 student athletes for try-outs at the end of August. For the second year in a row the program made three teams, Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen, and retained 36 student athletes for the sport. Second year Head Coach Alice Beth (Tierney) FitzPatrick is joined this year by assistant coaches Emily Moore, with JV, and Debbie Stadfeld, with the Freshmen team.

The Varsity Team is comprised of 14 players and has seven returning senior leaders, Jen Uang (captain), Madeline Forcier (captain), Maggie Tobin, Kathleen Harding, Stephanie Nguyen, Davielle Pierrette, and Marisa Fourax. The seniors are joined by returning juniors Christine Feeley, Rachel Keen, and Katie Bowler, as well as Daniella Lindemeyer, Hemilly Correa, Kathryn Ellersick, and Kelly Hayes.

The Mustangs started the season on September 9 with a competitive line-up of early season matches. Facing off against Arlington, Ursuline Academy, and Newton South to start, the Mustangs played hard and developed their understanding of the game. On Sunday, September 19 the varsity team competed for the first time in a ten-team friendship tournament at Milford. The play day was an excellent opportunity to play at a high level, gain individual playing experience, and the players truly came together as a team.

Medford started this week with its first Greater Boston League match against Everett. The teams played an extremely competitive match with Everett taking the win in three sets, 25-22, 25-23, and 26-24. The Mustangs will host the next two matches this week against GBL teams, Cambridge R & L on Wednesday, and Somerville on Friday.

“We are looking forward to a successful season and continuing to develop a strong volleyball program for Medford High and Voc. Tech. High School,” said Coach FitzPatrick.
