9 Years Later, Growth, Progress at 9/11 Site in NYC

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Medford native, recently provided an update on construction at the site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in lower Manhattan. The space will host a remembrance museum in addition to new office buildings. The museum will be ready for the tenth anniversary of 9/11 next year. Courtesy photo.

“…Number one [priority] is to build something that will give the families a place to remember their loved ones, but for all the rest of us freedom loving people – it’s not just New Yorkers, it’s not just Americans, but people around the world – tell the message to our children and grandchildren, freedom is fragile, and we have to constantly fight for it. And the progress that we’ve made here is helping us honor that obligation to our nation and to the Free World…Perhaps most encouraging is the progress of the new 9/11 Memorial & Museum…the spiritual and emotional heart of the site…It is going to be a memorial that we will all be proud of, and a memorial that will inspire people around the world.

America was attacked on 9/11, all of us, and everybody in this country rallied behind New York…New Yorkers deserve to see this hole in the heart of our city healed at last, and America expects us to do what’s right, and to reinforce the fact that this is the place where you can come from around the world and be proud of who you are and do what you want to do, say what you want to say, pray to whomever you want to pray…Sometimes it’s hard to think back on the tragedy that took place on 9/11, but how we came out of that is something that all America should be proud of,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

On the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Attorney General Martha Coakley, a Medford Democrat, and US Senator Scott Brown, a Wrentham Republican, issued the following statements.

“Nine years ago today, our nation suffered a brutal and senseless attack that took the lives of thousands of innocent people. It was a day that we will always remember, and that tested us all.

On this anniversary of September 11th, we mourn the victims who lost their lives on that tragic day and we offer our unwavering support to their family and friends. We honor the police, firefighters, emergency workers, and countless volunteers who responded with bravery, compassion and a common purpose – to help those in need. And we thank our soldiers who stand every day to protect the very freedoms that America stands for, and that terrorists will never succeed in taking away,” said Coakley.

““Nine years ago, our nation was attacked in a premeditated assault by terrorists whose goal was to create fear among our people and destroy our way of life. Far from having their intended effect, the terrorists who attacked us on September 11, 2001 only stoked the resolve of the American people and renewed our desire to live in freedom. Today, we remember and pay tribute to the more than 3,000 victims who died that day, as well as the members of our armed forces who have since given their lives to protect our way of life and the freedoms of our great nation,” said Sen. Brown.
