Seniors Alec Finn and Nick Murphy, pictured above with Head Coach Rico Dello Iacono, were elected team captains for the 2010 season. Finn (#88), a three year starter for the Mustangs, is a defensive end, tight end, and long snapper while Murphy (#40), a two-year starter, is a linebacker and running back.

The Mustang football team opened up its fall 2010 season on the road against Revere on Friday, September 10.

Last season, the Mustangs, who finished 2009 5-5, opened up the season with a huge 33-0 victory over the Patriots. Unfortunately for Medford, Revere was looking for revenge and got it with a 48-12 victory. Medford senior Ron Pitterson ran the kickoff for a touchdown on the first play of the game but Revere responded with forty points in the first quarter alone.

When the Mustangs hit the field in Revere on Friday their helmets beared the initials “TL” in honor of Medford sports icon Tony Lucci, who passed away in June.

“[Lucci] was instrumental to the lives of many youths in the City of Medford and the past and present Mustang Football Players and Coaches,” said a statement on the team’s website.

The Mustangs’ home opener is Friday, September 24 against BC High, and the team kicks off its Greater Boston League competition at Somerville on October 15.

In addition to its GBL games with Somerville, Cambridge, Malden, and Everett, Medford will face Barnstable, Malden Catholic, Newton South, and North Andover this season.
