State DOT: 93 Repairs Continue, Seek Alternate Routes

Northbound Lanes Should be Open for Thursday Morning Commute

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation released the following statement about the pot hole repairs on Route 93 North in Medford:

Bridge deck repairs on Interstate 93 Northbound at Exit 33, Route 28/Felsway West in Medford will continue throughout the afternoon and evening. Three lanes will be closed and one lane open to traffic on I-93 Northbound during the evening commute.

MassDOT recommends drivers in the Boston/Somerville/Medford areas consider alternate routes throughout the afternoon and evening. Those who are able should consider using public transportation if possible.

Alternate driving routes are listed below:

– Drivers on I-93 heading northbound toward Boston from the south should use Route 128/Interstate 95;
– Drivers leaving the downtown area headed northwest should take I-90 west to Route 128/I-95 north to I-93 north of the city;
– Drivers leaving the downtown area headed north may use the Tobin Bridge/Route 1 to Interstate 95.

MassDOT message boards will provide information about these alternate routes throughout the afternoon and evening.

In addition, the MBTA encourages use of public transportation where possible. To assist public transit users:

– The Orange Line will immediately add additional rush hour service.

Bridge deck repairs on the affected portion of I-93 Northbound in the Medford area will continue throughout the evening and overnight hours, with the expectation that the Northbound lanes will be open for tomorrow’s morning commute. The southbound lanes carrying the heaviest morning traffic are unaffected by the repairs.

MassDOT is working with the Massachusetts State Police and affected local communities to provide safe travel and keep residents informed during the duration of the I-93 Northbound bridge deck repairs and will provide traffic updates throughout the evening and tomorrow morning.
