The Massachusetts School Psychologists Association named Carl Sciortino Legislator of the Year at their Spring Conference in Framingham. Sciortino received the award in front of an audience of school psychologists and special educators from across the state.

Sciortino has been fighting for education reform at the State House. A bill Sciortino filed to recognize student mobility as a factor in school turnaround plans was incorporated into the Education Reform Bill signed into law this past January. Sciortino also filed a bill that would incorporate multiple assessment tools to determine graduation eligibility and eliminate the use of one, high-stakes assessment tool as the exclusive eligibility determinant.

“I am honored to receive the Legislator of the Year Award from the MSPA,” said Sciortino. “I have had the privilege of working with educators and organizations to learn where we are failing our students and devising strategies for improvement. These groups have come together to realize the importance of real education reform and I am working to deliver this reform on a state level.”

“Representative Carl Sciortino was recognized by our organization as an individual who has positively impacted the lives of children and their families at a systems level and at a state level,” said Susanne Toomijian, President of the MSPA. “He has been an advocate for increased funding for public education and initiatives that focus on early childhood education, lowering class size, increasing teacher salaries, tutoring services for students at risk of failing the MCAS, full-day kindergarten, and alternative education programs. He is well deserving of Legislator of the Year Award,” Toomijian remarked upon presenting Sciortino with the award.

The Massachusetts School Psychologists Association was established to provide and promote learning, human welfare and dignity in schools within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The objectives of the association include stimulating and advancing quality education for all students through the development of sound educational programs based on psychological research and to promote the emotional and social development and psychological well-being of all students in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
