Gilchrist Leads Tufts Past St. Joseph’s College

Jumbos Win NESCAC, Advance to Div. 3 Regionals

Sophomore Jumbo pitcher Kevin Gilchrist, a Medford resident and former Malden Catholic standout, led the Tufts University baseball team past St. Joseph’s College (Maine) on Wednesday to bring the Jumbos to a 12-3 victory.

Gilchrist, a sturdy 6’3″, 195-pound lefty, got the start for Tufts and pitched the complete game. It was just his second complete game in five starts on the season. He improved his record to 5-0 and has a 2.45 ERA.

Tufts, winner of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), now advances to the next round of the NCAA Division III regional tournament. They play tournament host Eastern Connecticut State University at 1:15pm on Thursday.

Tufts, 10-2 in the NESCAC league and 31-5 overall, earned one of eight top seeds for regional play and earned an automatic bid to the national tournament by winning their second NESCAC championship this spring.

This is Tufts’ third appearance in the NCAA tournament in the twenty-seven years John Casey has served as coach.
