Girls U15 Lax Earns Mothers’ Day Win

Medford’s Girls U15 lacrosse team celebrated a big win over Waltham on Sunday.

The Mother’s Day victory was due to the outstanding effort and strong defense by each of the players. Waltham scored first but center Jamie Traverse quickly answered back with a hard shot and the Mustangs’ first goal. Playing quick and smart offensive helped attack wing Elizabeth O’Donovan score Medford’s second. Both Nicole Mortell and Sheila Correia did a great job taking the draws and moving the ball up the field. Kirsten Tringale, Mikalya Cutler and Hailee Centrella really hustled as wings in the midfield, playing great defense and getting ground balls.

Brianna Burke started out the second half strong, with her speed and stick-handling scoring Medford’s third goal. Sarah Boudreau and Miranda Arena played excellent attack wings and controlled midfield. Marissa Coit, Maggie Flaherty and Hannah Gallup worked hard transitioning the ball up the field with great passes. Christina Bianco, playing low attack, got another one by Waltham for the lady Mustangs’ fourth goal of the game.

Kaleigh O’Donovan and Mary-Kate Cullinane did an awesome job settling Medford in the offensive zone and maintaining possession. Marissa Nargi, Shannon Froysa and Rebecca Walker worked hard on low attack, making smart plays and great passes. Adrienne Porrazzo, playing aggressive but smart as a defensive wing, worked hard and scored the fifth goal for Medford.

Michela Knight had a phenomenal game in goal, only letting up one goal and stopping everything else Waltham tried to get by her.

Each player had a great game and the strong defense really won the game for the girls. All the girls did a great job communicating. This season the returning players have helped to lead by example for the more than half of the team who are first-year players.

Head coaches of the Medford U15 girl’s lacrosse team are Lindsay Whooley and Carla Manganaro. Medford looks to take on Belmont next Sunday.
