Mustang Baseball Shuts Out Boston English

Medford’s Salvati 3-0 on the Mound

The Mustang varsity baseball team beat Boston English Thursday 6-0 behind a stellar pitching performance by Chris Salvati.

Salvati has improved his personal record on the mound to 3-0. He pitched a complete game, only allowing one hit and dispatching Boston English with just sixty-one pitches.

Head Coach Nick Tucci said Salvati was efficient because he was able to get ahead of 90% of the batters he faced.

“As a result of him pounding the strike zone early in the count, he was able to use his array of pitches- fastball, curve and change-up- to keep the hitters off balance. He pitched to weak contact and allowed our defense to make the plays behind him,” said Coach Tucci.

The Mustangs were lead offensively by senior captain Danny Gunn (2 for 4 with a triple), senior captain Greg Wilson (2 for 3), junior Danny Gilchrist (1 for 3 with a triple), and senior captain Kyle Heath (2 for 3).

According to Coach Tucci, Medford scored one run in the 1st inning, four runs in the 3rd inning and one run in the 7th inning.

The Mustangs improved to 5-1 on the season with the win. They have three home games next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday against Matignon, Somerville, and Cambridge. They are currently 1-0 in the Greater Boston League after defeating Malden on Tuesday.

Despite winning the past four games in a row, Coach Tucci does not want his team getting too comfortable and letting down their guard.

“As the coach, I always try and find teaching points to mention to my players… I am starting to see a trend where we tend to get comfortable with a 3 or 4 run lead. The guys have to learn how to keep our intensity going and deliver the ‘knockout punch’ to a team that we have on the ropes. Every team goes through slumps of some kind but I always tell my players that it is inexcusable to slump when it comes to bringing your best effort and intensity to the ballpark,” said Coach Tucci.
